NHL Players Threatening To Go To The KHL Is All The Rage Now
So here’s the hot new trend in the street. Player X hits restricted free agency. Negotiations with their team are stalling and neither side is willing to give. So Player X’s agent floats a story out there that Player X has plenty of offers in the KHL and will go play overseas if they can’t come to terms with the team. Sam Bennett pulled this move a few weeks ago and it got him absolutely nowhere. I’m assuming that Bennett wanted Gaudreau/Monahan type money but he ended up re-signing with Calgary for 2 years at $1.95M AAV. Andreas Athanasiou pulled this move a few weeks ago and… well he’s actually probably going to have to play in the KHL because the Red Wings don’t have any money for him.
And now, David Pastrnak is the latest millennial to threaten to head to the KHL if Boston doesn’t pay up.
Now obviously the chances of David Pastrnak skipping out to the KHL are somewhere between 0% and 0%. His agent can say all he wants that the Olympics are going to play into this decision. But it’s clearly just a leverage tactic here, trying to get Boston to finally pay the man his money. And truth be told, I agree with them on that part. I think everybody outside of the Bruins management would agree that the fact its even taken this long already is a massive failure on their end. However, I’m getting really sick of this shit really quickly. We can’t have a bunch of 20-somethings running around yelling KHL every time they’re in a contract dispute. It takes away from the validity of the threat every time somebody new uses this tactic. Like when every fucking Lena Dunham in America said they were going to move to Canada if Trump got elected and yet they’re all still right here exactly where they were 10 months ago.
Which is why I think we need to come up with a new rule here. You want to threaten to go to the KHL? That’s fine. But I don’t think you should get off with it that easy once you re-sign with your NHL club. If you threaten to go to the KHL, I think you should be forced to play there for at least one season. It doesn’t need to be the immediate season after the threat. It could be a little further into your career. Maybe the season after your new contract runs out would make the most sense. But you should definitely be contractually obligated to play there for at least a full season. Nut up or shut up.
Oh. And somebody go out there and offer sheet Pasta already. I know it’s not as easy as just throwing the offer his way and then he’s yours. But there has to be teams out there who have the money and the assets to make this work. Give me just a little more chaos heading into the season.
