Trinidad And Tobago. Look How Far They’ve Come
Not sure if you heard about this or not but the USMNT lost to Trinidad & Tobago 2-1 last night and thus failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup. How wacky is that? I know, right?
But if there’s one good thing to come from the mess that is the current state of US Soccer, it’s that we were all reminded last night of one of the greatest hockey teams ever assembled. No, not the 84-85 Oilers. Not the 91-92 Penguins. We’re obviously talking about team Trindad And Tobago at the 1994 Junior Goodwill Games.
They may not have been the most skilled team in the world but holy shit did these guys know how to party. A team that was happy enough just scoring against Team USA, a team of misfits who went from winning a peewee state championship to representing the entire nation in record speed. But here they were. Losing 9-0 to Team USA and after 1 goal they were partying like they just won the whole damn tournament. I can get down with a team like that. I feel like most people can get down with a team like that. I’d find it hard to believe that there’s anyone out there who doesn’t have Trinidad And Tobago in their Top 10 Favorite Hockey Teams Ever list. And I’d find it even harder to believe that there’s anyone out there who doesn’t have their jerseys ranked #1 on their all-time list.
So even in the midst of what turned out to be a disaster for the USMNT last night, it was a great stroll down memory lane for myself and plenty of other Mighty Ducks enthusiasts. And you know what? Good for Trinidad And Tobago. They went from a country who got smoked 20 years ago by Team USA 9-2, to knocking them out of World Cup qualification with a 2-1 win last night. Sorry but I’m a sucker for underdog stories. It’s the Miracle On Ice fan in me.
